2 Peter 1:4-10

"Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:" 2 Peter 1:4-10

"...And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue..."  How intense is that command???  If we believe that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, then what does all diligence mean?  I know that I have not put nearly enough effort out for these spiritual 'fruits.'  May the Lord help us all to be more faithful in our calling!

Then comes the promise; and the warning....

"For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. • I appreciated the depth of meaning word studies like that bring out. I'm afraid this comment won't be as extensive as the one I had wrote last night, but somehow thoughts don't form themselves as easily the second time. Somehow blogger hasn't allowed me to publish for the last three days or so....

Anyway, I was blessed by the aspect of patience you brought out. That's been a character trait I've been studying and thinking a lot about lately, so it was neat to read a little more on it. One other meaning that I've noticed in my studies has been "a faithful abiding under," especially referring to trials and difficult circumstances that come our way.

Thanks for sharing your study! I'm sure you were even more blessed by doing it!

  • Great exposition, Ryan.

As Christians, it is truly vitally important to our walks with the Saviour that we not forget the ‘exceeding great and precious promises’ that Christ has left for us. 2Peter 1:4-10 are some of my favorite verses, because they share with us some very precious and beautiful promises.

I am so grateful that thru Christ, and His promises, I truly can ‘escape the corruption that is in the world.’ Knowing Jesus and living His promises provide such eternal joys and treasures, which the world could never offer me!

I especially appreciated the definition of patience, as well... often it seems that being patient and waiting on God is the most difficult thing to do in the Christian life! I recently realized, too, that I had an entirely wrong view of what the Biblical definition for ‘patience’ is. I never understood why we would be told to run ‘the race with patience’(Hebrews 12:1)... that phrase seemed like such a contradiction to me! But when I looked it up, the word patience there means, “persevering endurance.” Now it makes perfect sense! Waiting on God, and ‘running the race’ really go hand in hand— you cannot have the one without the other! Praise God! I have so much to learn...:-)

    Anyhow,
Excellent post! Thank you, and God’s richest blessings to you and yours!
