Dying To Self

When you are forgotten or neglected or purposely set at naught,
and you do not sting and hurt at the oversight,
but your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ;
that is dying to self.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed,
your advice disregarded, your opinions ridiculed,
and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart
or even defend yourself, but take all in patient loving silence;
that is dying to self.

When you quietly forbear any disorder, any irregularity,
any impunctuality, or any annoyance;
when you can stand face to face with waste, folly,
extravagance, spiritual insensibility and endure it as Jesus endured it;
that is dying to self.

When you are content with any food, any offering, any raiment,
any climate, any society, any solitude, any interruption by the will of God;
that is dying to self.

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation,
or to record your own good works, or itch after commendation;
when you can truly love to be unknown,
that is dying to self

When you can receive correction and reproof from one
of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly
as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or
resentment rising up within your heart,
that is dying to self.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

  • Oh wow. Amen. This was very convicting for me, and I needed to hear it (!).
    I claim to be a servant of Jesus, His follower, and yet I know that I do not posses His humility of mind and His selfless love.
    I was reminded of something I just read in Madame Jeanne Guyon's classic, "Experiencing God" :
    "What a hungering for sufferings those souls have, who so glow with divine love! They would throw themselves into excessive self-discipline and self-denial if God permitted them to pursue their own desires! They think of nothing except how they may please their Beloved, and they often begin to neglect and forget themselves. As their love for God increases, so does self-detestation and disregard of the creature."
    What a perfect, perfect example Jesus was of all of this and more in every word and every way! Truly, the answer is always a deeper, (more) intimate relationship with Him, and with that abandonment to Him will come that "self-detestation."
    "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
    And He said unto me, my grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in mine infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
    Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."
    2Corinthians 7:1, 12:9&10.

    Thanks for sharing this. I really appreciated it. God bless!!!

  • AMEN. I stand convicted and tried... what a cutting thought you've provoked. Truly, how I want to be like Paul, who could say, "I die daily." (Taken from 1 Cor. 15... a wonderful chapter to meditate on when you have the time.) Oh how the Lord will USE those whose heart is perfect toward Him- pray that we wouldn't loose our focus!

    ...It will be worth it all when we see Jesus, Life's trials will seem so small when we see Christ; One glimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase, So bravely run the race till we see Christ.
